Traffic Accidents in Washington

Washington State ranks among the leading states in the United States with the highest number of accidents per year. Official reports indicate that the primary factors contributing to these accidents are reckless driving, speeding, and distracted driving.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has revealed the total number of accidents that have occurred in the state over the last year and how many of them were fatal. There have been a total of 78,544 accidents in the state and 682 of them resulted in fatalities.

From the data, it is safe to say that while the total number of accidents in this state has reduced, the number of fatalities has increased from last year. The causes of the accidents have remained largely the same viz. driving under the influence, underage driving, and distracted driving.

The WSDOT reported that out of the 78,544 accidents, 4,939 were due to driving under the influence, 10,944 were due to teenage driving, and 13,982 were due to distracted driving. 2,360 of these accidents were attributed to pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

Based on the data reported by the WSDOT, it is possible to pinpoint the areas and cities in Washington state that have the most number of accidents. Seattle has been reported to have the most number of accidents, followed by Tacoma and Vancouver. The rest of the cities in order of decreasing danger are as follows – Everett, Kent, Yakima, Federal Way, Spokane Valley, Auburn, and Tukwila.

The reports also state that there is a specific window of time in which the majority of these accidents occur and that is between 6-9 p.m. This timing, however, is limited to the urban cities.

The CDC has said that there are three measures we can take to reduce the risk of being involved in or causing an accident:

  • Wearing a seatbelt – this is an extremely important measure as the lack of wearing one was a factor in a lot of the fatalities that occurred that year.
  • Avoiding driving under the influence – as previous data has revealed that driving under the influence accounts for over 4,000 of the total number of accidents. Taking care not to do this will not only save your life but will save others as well.
  • Obeying the speed limits – it is very easy to lose control of a vehicle when it goes beyond a certain speed. This has caused a lot of accidents and has resulted in serious injuries.

Please make sure to use these measures and ensure that accidents are avoided at all costs. Stay updated on all the latest accidents along with Nationwide Report.
