Multiple people were injured after the driver of a stolen Subaru went through a red light and hit a truck before ramming into a taco shop in Escondido on late Thursday.
The investigation began in Oceanside, when two males stole a Subaru Forester at knifepoint. Someone informed Escondido police a short time later and reported witnessing a Subaru driving erratically. The eyewitnesses then reported seeing the small SUV drive through a red light at about 10:15 p.m. and smash into a truck at Valley Parkway and Fig.
Due to the impact, the driver of the truck was thrown from the vehicle. The car’s driver reportedly received critical injuries. The preliminary reports showed that the Subaru swerved off the road and slammed into Frida’s Fish Tacos at 675 E. Valley Parkway. The car ended up in the middle of the restaurant with a field of broken glass and debris along the sidewalk and entrance.
There were two men, two women and two children inside the stolen Subaru when the incident happened. Several people inside the car were transported to the hospital; including two children aged 3 and 5 years old. The children only incurred minimal injuries. Two men fled the crash scene, but were detained by officers.
Officers identified 20-year-old Hans Velasquez, of Oceanside, as the driver of the stolen Subaru. He ran away from the scene on foot, but was arrested a short distance away on suspicion of carjacking, felony driving under the influence of alcohol, felony hit-and-run and felony child endangerment. 19-year-old Anthony Quezada, of Escondido, also took off after the accident and was taken into custody on suspicion of carjacking.
The incident remains under active review.
