A man and a child were rescued after their car went into a canyon in Mira Mesa overnight, while the driver was later detained on suspicion of DUI.
Authorities actively responded to an open area near Mercy Road and Kika Court at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on reports of a single-vehicle accident. On arrival, firefighters made their way down a steep hill to access a vehicle that was trapped at the bottom. The early reports showed that a man and his son were in the car when the accident happened.
Emergency responders later walked the man up the hill with each arm looped under a firefighter. He was placed on a stretcher and wheeled to the back of an ambulance. The man was assessed at a local hospital and eventually taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
Medical workers also evaluated the boy in the back of an ambulance after he was brought back up to the street. He did not receive serious injuries as a result of the accident. It is not clear why the car ended up rolling down the hill. Authorities believe that the vehicle was not traveling at full speed when it veered off the road. No other details are available.
An investigation continues.
