On early Thursday morning, a van caught fire after it crashed into a tree in front of a San Diego Police substation in City Heights, prompting an emergency response from firefighters.
At about 2:10 a.m., San Diego Police stated that a van was heading on Landis Street when it left the roadway for unknown reasons and slammed into a tree that stood in front of the SDPD Mid-City substation. Responding police officers managed to pull the driver out of the wrecked vehicle as it started to catch fire. Just after officers led the man away, the van burst into flames and a fire began burning the tree.
Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes. The reports showed that the tree was destroyed, but the substation was not damaged due to the crash or the fire. The reports further revealed that driver underwent an evaluation for a possible DUI. It is unclear if the driver received injuries or required hospitalization following the collision.
