multi-vehicle-accident

All lanes of northbound Interstate Highway 680 were blocked following a wreck Friday morning in Fremont.

As per the initial information, the multi-vehicle accident took place just after 5 a.m. between Durham Road and S. Grimmer Blvd. A tanker truck and at least one other vehicle were involved in the accident. The big rig rolled on its side and was leaking fuel. It was also reported that the fuel was leaking into a storm drain and retention pond. Hazmat teams were also at the scene.

Around 100 homes situated along the I-680 south sound wall were evacuated by Fremont police due to the smell of gasoline. The Public Works Corps Yard was offered as a temporary evacuation shelter for residents. The early reports showed that a tanker truck rolled over after colliding with the car that had spun out and came to rest.

It is unknown if the crash caused any injuries. It is also unclear what led up to the collision. All northbound lanes of 680 will remain blocked for several hours north of SR-262 (S. Mission Boulevard) during investigation and cleanup. Northbound drivers were advised to use I-880 north to 238/580. No other details are available.

An investigation is underway.
