A hit-and-run crash killed 54-year-old Derrick Smith in Long Beach (Long Beach, CA)

Authorities identified 54-year-old Derrick Smith, a beloved security guard, who died in a hit-and-run crash in Long Beach, police confirmed.

According to investigators, the 54-year-old man, a resident of Los Angeles, was working at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue when a car crashed into his work station.

The incident took place at about 3 p.m. Saturday. The force of the collision was so violent that the whole structure was broken into pieces. Tenants who knew Smith mentioned that they are just shocked and devastated. Authorities continue to look for the hit-and-run driver.

An investigation is continuing at this time.
