A 70-year-old man who was jogging received serious injuries Monday morning after a suspected impaired driver reportedly lost control of their car and caused a multi-vehicle accident near Baseline Road and 48th Street.
The preliminary reports showed that the driver of a Ford Flex was speeding along Baseline Road at 7:30 a.m. when they collided with a work truck heading in the westbound lane. The truck shifted right due to the impact and struck a Valley Metro bus.
The Flex’s driver kept on traveling until it hit the curb and tipped over on its side. The reports further revealed that the vehicle continued moving across the sidewalk until it hit a 70-year-old man who had been jogging along Baseline Road. On arrival, medics rushed the jogger to the hospital with serious injuries.
Tempe police stated that the Flex’s driver displayed signs of impairment and should have had an ignition interlock device installed on their car. The driver, whose identity was not revealed, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault. The reports also added that the drivers of other vehicles suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The wreck remains under active review.
