Officials identified 69-year-old Jeffrey Hilbert, of Wickenburg, as the man who lost his life following a multi-vehicle wreck Monday in Surprise.
Officers actively responded to the southbound lanes of Grand and 163rd Avenues at approximately 11 a.m. after getting reports of a four-vehicle pile-up in which a box truck, a semi-truck and two cars were involved. According to the investigation reports, a Penske box truck slammed into a Toyota passenger. The force of the collision sent the Toyota into the desert where it came to a rest.
Two occupants of the car received injuries, but the extent of the injuries sustained by them is unknown at this time. After that, the Penske truck hit a semi-truck and a Nissan Altima. The driver of the Nissan Altima, 69-year-old Jeffrey Hilbert was killed as a result of the collision. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver of the semi did not receive any injuries in the accident.
Authorities initially reported that the semi-truck struck the box truck but later clarified. The driver of the Penske truck, identified as Dewey Sigler from Phoenix, was transported to a hospital after complaining of a possible heart attack. While at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, medical crews found a bag containing around 30 pills, presumably fentanyl, with Sigler’s belongings. According to Dewey Sigler, he used approximately 10 fentanyl pills daily.
Hospital’s initial toxicology report revealed that there was a presumptive positive for methamphetamines in Sigler’s urine. He was later released and taken into the Maricopa County Jail on several charges including manslaughter and drug-related offenses. No other information has been provided.
An investigation is ongoing.
