On Tuesday, 61-year-old Charles Loving, of Hammond, died of injuries he suffered following a rear-end collision on March 4 in Whiskey Bay that also injured 33-year-old Melvin Thomas.
The fatal two-vehicle crash took place on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. According to the investigation reports, Loving was a passenger in the vehicle, which was forced to stop in the left lane of the bridge due to the flat tire. The driver of that vehicle, 33-year-old Melvin Thomas, was checking the car when it was hit from behind by another vehicle.
Due to the impact, Thomas was launched off the interstate and he plunged into the water below, where he was saved by a passing fisherman. Both Thomas and Loving suffered serious injuries and were flown to an area hospital.
On Wednesday, officials confirmed that Loving succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on Tuesday. The incident did not lead to any other serious injuries. No criminal charges have been filed at this time. No other details are available.
An investigation is continuing.
