55-year-old man critically injured after being hit by a vehicle on U.S. 131 while retrieving couch (Grand Rapids, MI)

A 55-year-old Grand Rapids man received critical injuries after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday as he attempted to retrieve a couch that fell on the freeway.

As per the initial information, the auto-pedestrian collision took place at around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1. The early reports indicated that a 55-year-old man was in the southbound lanes after a couch fell from a vehicle he was driving. The reports further showed that he pulled his vehicle to the side of the road and then went into the road.

He was trying to pull the couch across the road when he was hit by another southbound vehicle. The injured man was rushed to a Grand Rapids hospital. Officials blocked two of the freeway’s three lanes during the investigation, causing a traffic backup. No other information is available.

The incident remains under review.
