On Tuesday morning, a 46-year-old woman incurred only minor injuries after her car was crushed by a semi-truck on I-5 in Mount Vernon.
As per the initial information, the three-vehicle pile-up took place on the Skagit River Bridge. The early reports showed that the woman was the sole occupant of the Nissan Altima when the vehicle was sandwiched between two semi-trucks.
Reports further added that the semi-truck in front of the Nissan slowed down because of traffic, and the woman driving the car also slowed as a result. The semi-truck behind the Nissan failed to stop in time and crashed into the passenger car. The force of the collision propelled the Nissan forward into the other semi-truck, causing the car to fold. The semi-truck behind the car ended up on top of it.
All northbound and southbound I-5 lanes were shut down at about 10:50 a.m. as crews worked at the scene. Responders were worried as movement on the bridge caused the semi-truck to shake and the car driver was pinned inside her vehicle under the semi. The driver managed to get out on her own as a tow truck lifted the front of the truck.
Reports further stated that the woman was feeling only minor rib and head pain. She was transported to a hospital for further observation. I-5 southbound lanes were back open at 11:30 a.m. and the northbound lanes reopened at 12:26 p.m.
An investigation is ongoing.
