A 44-year-old man lost his life after a vehicle drove through the shrubbery and hit him while he was lying near some bushes in an Encinitas parking lot on Friday afternoon.

As per the initial information, the fatal incident took place just before 3:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Enterprise Bank & Trust on North El Camino Real approximately a half-mile north of Encinitas Boulevard. The early reports showed that the victim was lying on some grass on an embankment that was below and out of sight of the parking lot when he was struck.

He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It is unknown why the SUV’s driver, a 61-year-old woman, drove over the curb and plowed through the bushes. It was initially stated that deputies detained her on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. However, it was later said that investigators had not determined if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident. No other details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
