32-year-old woman died, 32-year-old Alberto Rojas and 4 other people injured after a crash near Mendota (Mendota, CA)

A 32-year-old woman lost her life while 32-year-old Alberto Rojas, from Fresno, and four other people received injuries following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday near Mendota.

As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the area of West Panoche Road and Highway 33 at around 4:45 a.m. on reports of a car accident. The preliminary reports showed that a 2003 Nissan Sentra was heading westbound on West Panoche Road. The Nissan, driven by 32-year-old Alberto Rojas and carrying three passengers, tried to cross Highway 33 after stopping at a posted stop sign.

The Nissan entered the southbound lane of Highway 33 directly in the way of a southbound 2001 Toyota Sienna driven by 55-year-old Santos Valentin, of Mendota, carrying three passengers. The front of the Toyota struck the right side of the Nissan. Rojas sustained major injuries in the wreck and was flown to Madera Community Regional Hospital by helicopter.

A 32-year-old woman in the front right passenger seat of the Nissan was airlifted to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno but was later declared dead at the hospital. A female passenger in the rear of the Nissan was also transported to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno with major injuries. Valentin incurred minor injuries in the collision and refused medical attention at the scene.

A 59-year-old man and a 62-year-old man, both from Mendota, who were passengers in the Toyota, were shifted to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno with moderate injuries. A 26-year-old man who was a passenger in the Nissan and a 43-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Toyota, both had minor injuries in the crash and were not transported. Drugs and alcohol did not seem to be involved in the collision. No further details are available.

The accident remains under investigation.
