29-year-old Madyson James and 38-year-old Ruiju Ma died following a wrong-way collision on I-80 (Crockett, CA)

The Contra Costa County medical examiner identified 29-year-old Madyson James, of San Francisco, and 38-year-old Ruiju Ma, of Vallejo, as the victims who lost their lives following a fiery, head-on collision early Sunday in Crockett.

The fatal car accident took place on I-80 near the Carquinez Bridge. A Honda SUV and a Tesla collided head-on with each other, killing two people, one of whom was a San Francisco woman who had been reported missing.

The investigation reports showed that a wrong-way driver was going west on eastbound I-80 when it crashed head-on into a second vehicle. Officials got reports of wrong-way motorist traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 in Crockett near the Carquinez Bridge at Cummings Skyway at around 3:41 a.m.

The wrong way vehicle, a Honda SUV, kept on going westbound in the eastbound lanes when it slammed head on into a Tesla Model 3 heading in the correct direction on I-80, just west of Pomona Street. Both vehicles had major damage and came to a stop within the eastbound lanes with the Tesla ending up upside down and the Honda SUV nearly on top of it.

A few moments after, a Toyota Camry heading eastbound struck the damaged vehicles. The Honda and the Tesla became fully engulfed in flames after the crash. All eastbound lanes of I-80 were completely closed down for several hours during the investigation and cleanup. The incident caused a major traffic back-up. All lanes were back open by around 7:45 a.m.

In the missing person report issued by San Francisco police on Monday evening, James was last seen on Sunday, March 20 at about 12:15 a.m. getting into her white 2015 Honda Fit. The crash she was involved in occurred several hours later. It is still unknown if drugs and alcohol contributed to the deadly collision. No other information is available.

An investigation continues.
