A 23-year-old man from Texas tragically lost his life early Saturday in a fiery fatal crash on Interstate 5, as confirmed by Washington State Patrol spokesperson John Dattilo.
The driver crashed into one barrier, spun across all lanes, struck the opposite barrier, and the vehicle burst into flames. His 22-year-old passenger from California sustained injuries but is expected to survive.
The northbound lanes of I-5 near milepost 120 and the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Main Gate were closed for nearly 7 hours as crews investigated the motor vehicle accident.
WSP determined reckless driving to be the cause.
Another vehicle, a BMW X3, collided with the damaged car due to poor visibility, but its driver remained uninjured. The freeway closure caused traffic diversions, with authorities urging drivers to delay travel through the area.
