A tragic single-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 8 between Yuma and Gila Bend claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The motor vehicle accident occurred near milepost 88 around 2:30 p.m., approximately 20 miles east of Dateland and 30 miles west of Gila Bend. Upon arrival, authorities discovered two fatalities at the scene, with three additional victims sustaining serious injuries.
The injured were airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital, where they remain in critical condition as of Tuesday morning. Another victim was transported via ambulance to an undisclosed hospital, their condition is currently unknown.
Detectives suspect a blowout of the right-rear tire precipitated the collision, although the investigation is ongoing. The identity of the victims has not been released at this time.
