Two people injured after a wrong-way accident on SR-51 in Phoenix (Phoenix, AZ)

Two people suffered injuries following a wrong-way accident early Friday morning along a Phoenix freeway.

As per the initial information, the two-vehicle crash took place on State Route 51 at about 1:30 a.m. Authorities received reports that a vehicle was heading southbound in the northbound lanes. Shortly after, 911 callers reported a head-on collision near Thomas Road.

The wrong-way motorist is a 44-year-old woman from Phoenix. Both she and the other driver received non-critical injuries. The wrong-way driver was in the left lanes near the median. The wrong-way driver was suspected of impairment and was taken to the hospital. Charges are pending. State Route 51 was later opened again at Thomas Road. No other information is available.

The incident remains under review.
