A 19-year-old male passenger was critically injured after a speeding vehicle slams into a tree late Tuesday night on the city’s South Side while authorities took the 47-year-old driver into custody for driving while intoxicated.
As per the initial information, the single-vehicle accident took place at about 11 p.m. in the 2900 block of Shane Road, close to Loop 410 and Southton Road. The preliminary reports showed that the pair was riding in a Chevrolet southbound on Villamin Road toward Shane Road at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, travelled into a wooded area and hit a tree.
The two men got trapped inside their vehicle as a result of the collision. Firefighters utilized tools to remove both the victims from the vehicle. The 47-year-old driver was rescued immediately by firefighters, but crews took more time to free the 19-year-old passenger.
The passenger was then rushed to Brooke Army Medical Center by EMS with major injuries. He is currently listed in critical condition. Officers found driver to be intoxicated and he was booked on a charge of intoxication assault. No other details are available.
The crash remains under review.
