Authorities identified Tyler James as the coach who lost his life following a traffic collision in Tuesday in Andrews.

The fatal two-vehicle crash took place at about 8:17 p.m. on a two-lane road approximately nine miles from the city of Andrews, northwest of Midland. According to the investigation reports, a van carrying members of a New Mexico university’s golf teams and a pickup crashed into each other.

Due to the impact, both the vehicles got engulfed in flames. Authorities confirmed that there were deaths in both vehicles. The University of the Southwest in Hobbs reported that the USW men’s and women’s golf teams was riding in the bus at the time of the collision. Officials stated that the vehicle carrying the teams was a 17-passenger van, whereas the University of the Southwest mentioned that it was a 12-passenger van.

At this time, it is unknown how many people were killed as a result of the crash. The University of the Southwest President Quint Thurman informed the authorities that two of their students have survived and were flown to University Hospital in Lubbock in serious condition. Those were reportedly the only two survivors. No other details are made available.

An investigation is continuing.
