On Wednesday, officials identified 56-year-old John Carthel Eugene Gabbard as the man who lost his life after being hit by a vehicle Tuesday morning in El Cajon.
The fatal hit-and-run crash took place at about 5:55 a.m. on Ballantyne Street a little south of Broadway. According to the investigation reports, a truck struck the man just before noon while he was walking across Ballantyne Street. On arrival, responders found Gabbard unconscious with serious head trauma. He was found in the southbound lanes of Ballantyne Street near Sandalwood Drive, between Broadway and the Interstate 8 underpass.
Emergency crews rushed Gabbard to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego with critical injuries. His condition declined, and he succumbed to his injuries at 11:45 a.m. approximately six hours after the collision. Officials believe that a dark colored truck hit Gabbard as it was traveling south towards the I-8 Bridge. The truck left the crash scene before the arrival of officers. No other details were provided.
The incident remains under active review.
