Authorities identified 54-year-old Dung T Nguyen, of Lakewood, as the man who lost his life following a traffic collision Friday morning on I-5.
The fatal multi-vehicle accident took place at around 7:45 a.m. on I-5 at 38th Street in Tacoma. According to the investigation reports, the 65-year-old St. Louis man was driving a semi-trailer traveling north on Interstate 5 he crashed into Nguyen’s vehicle, which caused a series of wrecks in the area. Seven of those vehicles were stopped in traffic at the time of the wreck.
The 73-year-old Lacey man suffered injuries and was transported to Tacoma General Hospital for treatment. A total of four people were injured and one person was killed at the scene, later identified as Dung T Nguyen. A 28-year-old Tacoma woman, a 44-year-old Troutdale, Oregon woman and a 22-year-old Eugene, Oregon woman also suffered injuries as a result of the accident.
The driver of the semi-trailer was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular homicide, four counts of vehicular assault and driving under the influence. The road in the area was shut down for more than seven hours as crews worked at the scene. No other details are made available.
An investigation is continuing.
