Officials identified 51-year-old James J Peoples who died after a crash in southeast Pierce County (Pierce County, WA)

Authorities identified 51-year-old James J Peoples, from Elbe, as the man who lost his life after being hit by a vehicle on Saturday evening in southeast Pierce County.

The fatal auto-pedestrian crash took place at around 6:40 p.m. on State Route 706 at Mount Tahoma Canyon Road in the town of Ashford. According to the investigation reports, a 40-year-old Covington man was traveling east on State Route 706. Peoples was crossing westbound SR 706, west of Mount Tahoma Canyon Road.

Just then, Covington man traveled into oncoming traffic and hit Peoples. James J Peoples succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The 40-year-old Covington man was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular homicide and DUI. The road was shut down for approximately five hours after the collision. No further details were provided.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
