Authorities identified 47-year-old Aaron Cooper as the victim who lost his life after getting hit by a Whatcom County Public Works snowplow Tuesday night on SR-9.
The fatal auto-pedestrian crash took place shortly after 6 p.m. in the northbound lanes on State Route 9 just south of Deming, located east of Bellingham. According to the investigation reports, Aaron Cooper was walking along the small shoulder, wearing dark clothing with his back to traffic when he was struck.
The driver, 56-year-old James Endersby, quickly stopped and provided aid to the man. The driver of the snowplow said that he failed to see the pedestrian until he was about 8 feet in front of the plow. Cooper succumbed to his injuries at the crash scene. The area where the accident occurred was described by the authorities as very rural with no crosswalks nearby.
It is unknown why the victim was walking along such a rural part of SR 9. SR 9 was shut down until about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday as crews worked at the scene. Cooper was walking in the same direction as the plow when it struck him from behind, officials mentioned. No other details are available.
An investigation continues.
