Officials identified 40-year-old Brandon John Vandersloot who died in a head-on crash (Alpine Township, MI)

Authorities identified 40-year-old Brandon John Vandersloot, from Walker, as the man who lost his life following a head-on crash Thursday in Alpine Township.

The fatal two-vehicle crash took place shortly after 6 p.m. on Fruit Ridge Avenue NW near Stage Avenue in Alpine Township. According to the investigation reports, Vandersloot was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt south on Fruit Ridge when a tow truck in front of him slowed to make a turn.

While trying to avoid striking the tow truck, Vandersloot failed to maintain control of his car on the slippery road and slid into the path of the oncoming patrol car, a Chevrolet Tahoe.  The deputy, who has been with the Sheriff’s Department for 2 ½ years, was responding to an accident.

On arrival, medics rushed Brandon John Vandersloot to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The deputy involved in the collision was treated at a hospital and released. No other details are made available.

An investigation continues.
