One person was killed and another received injuries following a motorcycle crash that led to the closure of some lanes of eastbound Interstate 580 for several hours.
At about 1:15 p.m., officers actively responded to the eastbound I-580 lanes just before the 150th Avenue off-ramp after getting reports of an accident involving several vehicles, including a Nissan Murano SUV and a motorcycle. Three lanes were blocked by several vehicles and debris when responders arrived at the scene.
The preliminary reports showed that a Harley Davidson motorcycle with a rider and passenger entered the highway from the Grand Avenue on-ramp in San Leandro before crashing into the Nissan, which was stopped in traffic in the roadway’s right-hand lane.
Due to the impact, both rider and passenger were thrown onto the roadway’s open No. 3 lane, where a Ford Explorer hit the rider. The force of the crash sent the motorcycle further east along traffic lanes, into a second motorcycle that was stopped in traffic.
Paramedics rushed the motorcycle rider and passenger to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where the rider was later declared dead. He was only identified only as a 37-year-old Modesto resident. The motorcycle passenger was taken to the hospital with major injuries and was listed in stable condition.
The CHP announced a traffic alert at 1:46 p.m. asking drivers to avoid the area. The alert was lifted at 4:08 p.m. Officials believe that alcohol or substances did not contribute to the collision. However, investigators are working to determine whether speed or stop-and-go traffic conditions were involved in the wreck. No other details are available.
The accident remains under investigation.
