Authorities identified 64-year-old Melvin “Scott” Lockard, a resident of Kentfield, who lost his life when he was struck by a deer while riding on his Vespa scooter on Lucas Valley Road in San Rafael, authorities said.

The county coroner’s office named the rider Monday as Melvin “Scott” Lockard, 64. The incident took place at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, said Roger Fielding, chief deputy coroner. Lockard was heading east near Jerry Russom Memorial Park when the deer broadsided the scooter, Fielding added.

Lockard was thrown from the vehicle onto the shoulder after the impact and became unconscious. He was suffering from a heart attack when paramedics reached him. Despite the resuscitation efforts, he died on the spot. The cause of death will be determined once the investigation process is completed, Fielding stated.

An investigation is ongoing at this time.
