Authorities identified 26-year-old Jacob Wayne Wiatrek who died following a crash that happened east of La Vernia on Oct. 27.
As per the initial information, the fatal incident took place on F.M. 539, about a mile south of F.M. 2772 in which a La Vernia Independent School District bus and a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck were involved. The investigation reports showed that the pickup truck was going north on F.M. 539 when it swerved into the southbound lane as it approached a curve and hit the front left of the school bus.
Wiatrek, of La Vernia, who was the driver of the pickup truck and its sole occupant, was declared dead at the scene. The bus driver and bus aide, who were the only occupants of the bus, received medical aid at the crash site. The driver was then taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center and the aide was shifted to Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville for further evaluation.
DPS along with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, La Vernia Police Department, Wilson County District 3 EMS, and Wilson County District 1 Fire & Rescue responded to the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.
