The county medical examiner identified the 20-year-old Nyckolas Davis as the man who lost his life the car after the car he was riding rolled Aug. 4 on Cheney-Spokane Road.
Nyckolas Davis died after sustained several blunt force traumatic injuries, the Spokane County Medical Examiner said on Wednesday. The driver of the car, 19-year-old Rayce R Kent, was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular homicide, court documents said.
He was booked into Spokane County Jail and was held on a $25,000 bond, but is not currently listed as an inmate. As per the initial reports, the fatal incident happened at about 6 p.m. Aug. 4 after Kent, Davis and a 17-year-old were driving back from Fish Lake Park in Cheney. Court documents did not show the name of the third passenger.
The witness reported police that Kent had picked up Davis and himself in Kent’s car, which also contained two 18-packs of beer. Kent informed detectives the three drank at the park and that he consumed five to seven beers, as per court documents.
Kent gave a blood sample, which is still being tested at the Washington State Patrol toxicology lab. The trio left and Kent was driving the vehicle The witness reportedly asked Kent to slow down the vehicle. Other drivers on South Cheney-Spokane and South Sherman roads reported police that they witnessed the car lose control and roll.
Police who arrived at the scene believed Kent had been speeding and then failed to negotiate a bend in the road. The witness was in the front passenger seat of the car and incurred minimal injuries. Kent also went the hospital with slight injuries. Davis succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Kent’s parents told detectives that Kent had a drinking problem.
An investigation is continuing.
