On early Sunday, two people including a wrong-way driver and a two-year-old child in another vehicle were killed following a fiery accident on Eastex Freeway.
Houston Police Department officers were sent to the crash scene at around 3 a.m. to Eastex Freeway at North Loop after getting reports of a vehicle driving inbound in the outbound lanes of the freeway. On arrival, an officer found the suspect vehicle. Before the officer could do any act, the wrong-way driver hit another vehicle. The wrong-way driver’s vehicle caught fire due to the crash.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was declared dead at the scene. There were five occupants, two adults and three children, in the other vehicle. All five people were rushed to an area hospital, where one of the children, a two-year-old, later succumbed to their injuries. Police mentioned that several of the others are in serious condition.
It is unknown as of this moment that how long the hitting vehicle was traveling down the wrong side of the freeway. The northbound main lanes of the Eastex Freeway at North Loop were shut down for several hours. Authorities suspect the wrong-way driver may have been intoxicated and stated that a toxicology test will be performed during an autopsy.
An investigation is ongoing.
