A wrong-way accident on I-80 near Bay Bridge killed a woman; Erik Steverson arrested (Oakland, CA)

A woman lost her life following a multi-vehicle accident near the Bay Bridge in Oakland while 32-year-old Erik Steverson, a wrong-way driver, who initially fled the scene, was later detained by the officers on suspicion of DUI.

As per the initial information, a woman driving a Volkswagen Jetta was killed as a result of the crash that occurred at about 1 a.m. on the freeway, close to the interchange with I-580. The driver of a Chevrolet Impala is suspected of traveling the wrong way. He reportedly ran from the scene and hid in a bush on a bike path below the freeway before being caught.

Erik Steverson was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and driving under the influence, CHP said. The identity of the deceased will be released once the next of kin is notified.

The incident remains under investigation.
