San Antonio police say that a vehicle struck and claimed life of a cyclist near downtown.
The incident occurred in the 1400 block of North St. Mary’s Street. Police say at around 7 p.m., multiple cyclists were going south on St. Mary’s Street when the woman leading the group was stopped to wait for the other cyclists around Central Catholic High School when a vehicle hopped a curb and fatally hit her at a very high speed.
As per police, the woman was in her 30s or 40s, but authorities have not yet identified her. None of the other cyclists sustained injuries in the crash, but they saw the accident. Police said the driver stopped her vehicle about a block away from where the woman was struck.
Investigators say firefighters at a nearby station heard the collision and responded quickly without being called, but the woman succumbed from her injuries. The driver of the vehicle, who is described as a young woman, is being arrested by police who believe she displayed signs of intoxication at the time of the collision.
The crash is under investigation.
