On Wednesday, first responders were on their way to the crash scene of a rollover crash involving two vehicles in the median of I-5 south of the Slater Road interchange today at 11:15am.
As per preliminary reports, it was termed as a single vehicle crash with a sole occupant. Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Bellingham Fire Department were sent to the crash site. WSP closed down the left lane of northbound I-5 as of 11:25am.
As of 11:40am, southbound and northbound drivers through the affected area were experiencing major traffic delays. WSP reported that both northbound I-5 lanes had been opened again to traffic by 12pm (noon) while they continued to look into the crash from the median and left shoulder.
WSP Trooper Rocky Oliphant mentioned that the driver of the rolled vehicle was taken to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with minimal injuries, but there had been concern at the scene of the crash with more serious injuries.
Oliphant added that the investigation revealed that the silver 2008 Jeep Liberty moved from the right to the left lane and crashed into a black 2017 GMC Acadia in the process. Drugs or alcohol did not seem to have played a part in the crash. Police confirmed a citation to the driver of the Jeep for an unsafe lane change.
An investigation is ongoing.
