On Wednesday morning, an 18-year-old male was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital after an unlicensed driver did not yield the right of way and slammed into another vehicle on State Route 97, just north of Wapato.
As per the initial information, the two-vehicle crash happened at about 5:49 a.m. on August 25, 2021. The preliminary reports showed that a 62-year-old Wapato man in a 2003 Ford Explorer was going westbound on Jones Rd at US-97 at the same time as a 2018 Toyota Tundra along with three occupants.
The investigation determined that the driver of the Ford Explorer turned onto the highway although they did not have the right of way. At that point of time, the driver hit the Toyota, which was driven by a 38-year-old Wapato man with an 18-year-old male and another passenger, 62, in the vehicle.
On arrival, troopers came to know that the driver of the Explorer was operating the vehicle without a valid license and that he was uninsured. The young man was taken to the hospital to be medically examined and treated for his injuries. His current condition remain unknown at this time. Authorities confirmed that impairment from drugs and/or alcohol did not contribute to the crash.
An investigation is ongoing at this time.
