Police say that impairment seems to have played a part in a three-car wreck in Phoenix that claimed lives of two people and injured six others, three among them being children.
The incident took place at around 12:15 a.m. Monday at 37th and Grand avenues. As per the Phoenix Police Department, a driver had veered to avoid a non-injury wreck and struck the back of a second car.
The force of the crash propelled that car into oncoming traffic, where it crashed into a third vehicle that was going east on Grand Avenue. A man and a woman in that car were declared deceased at the scene, police confirmed. The driver of that third vehicle was unharmed.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, three adults and three children, including 3-year-old and 18-month-old twins were transported to the hospital. Reportedly, the women were in serious condition and the children were in stable condition.
Police states that three people were riding in the first car, two women and the three children in the second car, and a driver and two passengers in the third car. Police added that the driver of that first car showed signs of impairment.
Police have not revealed his name, they say he was issued a citation and then released. They also mentioned that additional charges are pending. Grand Avenue is shut down in both directions, which means that there will be traffic restrictions in the area.
An investigation is continuing.
