On Wednesday morning, 40-year-old Medora Lynn Burgess lost her life and a toddler suffered injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Lafayette Parish.
According to Louisiana State Police, the fatal incident took place shortly after 4 a.m. on Interstate 10 near mile marker 105 in west of the Louisiana Avenue exit. As per reports, Burgess was steering a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe west when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road. The SUV drove into the tree line, striking a tree in an area difficult to see from the road.
On arrival, authorities declared Burgess deceased. An unrestrained toddler was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. LSP is investigating why the vehicle ran off the road in the first place. Both Burgess and the toddler were unrestrained at the time of the crash. According to LSP, impairment is suspected and a toxicology sample was obtained for analysis.
The crash remains under active review.
