On Tuesday, a 72-year-old man lost his life and his 32-year-old passenger sustained injuries following a rollover accident in Ramona.
As per the initial information, the fatal single-vehicle crash took place at about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday on State Route 78, west of Rancho Santa Teresa Drive. The preliminary reports showed that a 72-year-old Santa Ysabel man was driving a Chevy 1500 pickup truck westbound when he could not negotiate a curve in the road and lost control of the vehicle.
Just then, the Chevy swerved off the north edge of the road and went down an embankment, causing it to roll. Due to the impact, the driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the crash scene despite life-saving efforts by first responders.
Repots further said that the passenger in the Chevy, a 32-year-old man, of Santa Ysabel, was pinned inside the vehicle after the accident. He was removed from the vehicle and transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. It is still unknown whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt or not at the time of the crash. It is also unclear if alcohol or drugs played a part in this crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
