35-year-old Paul Cosma lost his life and several others were injured after a wreck in Phoenix on Wednesday evening.
Medics responded to the scene at about 6 p.m. on reports of a four-car pile-up and, on arrival, found nine people in the wreckage with one person needing extrication. Five people in total were rushed to a hospital. Paul Cosma, 35, died after the SUV he was riding in was struck by a vehicle that disregarded a red light at 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road.
The investigation reports showed that a GMC Yukon traveling east on Cactus ran a red light and crashed into a Toyota Highlander, which was sent into a Toyota Camry. The reports further revealed that the debris from the crash hit a BMW. Cosma, who was a passenger of the Highlander, was rushed to a hospital where he died of his injuries. The Yukon’s female driver and the man driving the Highlander were taken to hospital with critical injuries.
The reports also added that two girls, ages 5 and 7, were also hospitalized. The girls, who were passengers in the Highlander, received non-serious injuries. No occupants of the Camry or BMW needed to be taken to the hospital. Authorities believe that impairment on behalf of the Yukon driver and speed might have contributed to the wreck.
An investigation continues.
