A multi-vehicle pile-up claimed lives of 2 people on Highway 20 and North Humphrey Road (Sutter County, CA)

On Tuesday afternoon, two people lost their lives following a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 20 and North Humphrey Road.

The incident took place on Highway 20 and North Humphrey Road occurred just after 2:30 p.m. in which three vehicles were involved. Yuba-Sutter CHP spokesman Joshua Oglesby reported that the wreck involved a sand and gravel big rig with two trailers, a Nissan Titan, and a GMC 3500.

Oglesby said that the big rig was traveling west on Highway 20. At the same time, the Nissan and GMC were heading east. Afterwards, the Nissan “for an unknown reason” maneuvered into the westbound lane into the way of the gravel truck.

Further evidence showed a different story. Oglesby then confirmed that the driver of the GMC rear-ended the Nissan. The force of the collision caused the Nissan driver to lose control following which the driver went into the westbound lane.

Oglesby further mentioned that the gravel truck’s front collided with the passenger side of the Nissan. Following which, the Nissan spun out of control. The impact of the crash detached Titan’s cabin from the cargo bed. The vehicle also had caught fire due to the crash.

At that point, the GMC driving behind the Nissan tried to swerve to the right and applied the brakes to avoid the collision. However, it hit the Nissan’s cargo bed. After the crash, the vehicles closed down both lanes of the freeway. The driver and passenger of the Nissan suffered major injuries and were later declared dead.

On arrival, emergency crews transported the GMC and big rig driver to a hospital in unknown condition. By 3:30 p.m., Highway 20 remained shut down in the area. The Sutter County Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The incident remains under active review.
