A fiery crash killed a motorcyclist on south of Mount Vernon (Mount Vernon, WA)

A motorcyclist lost his life following a fiery crash overnight near Big Lake in Skagit County, the Washington State Patrol says.

Troopers and firefighters quickly responded to the area, along State Route 9 near West Big Lake Boulevard, at around 10:05 p.m. Wednesday on reports of a crash and fire. The motorcycle had slammed into a tree and burst into flames as a result of which the motorcyclist died on the scene. Authorities have not released any other information details about him. On arrival, firefighters successfully put out the blaze, but the victim could not survive.

An initial investigation showed that the motorcyclist was traveling south on SR-9 then swerved into the northbound lane and off the road into the tree. The highway was shut down at the scene during the cleanup and investigation of the crash but has since opened again for traffic.
