On Monday, a 34-year-old Hayfork man lost his life while 26-year-old Irais Hernandez-Mateo, a resident of Santa Cruz, and his son suffered injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 3.
The incident happened at midnight Monday, south of Rourke Ranch Road. Officials said that the Hayfork man driving a 2006 Honda was southbound on the highway and he crossed the center divider into the path of an oncoming vehicle as a result of which the front of a 2017 Toyota collided with the Honda driver’s side.
On arrival, authorities declared the Hayfork man deceased on the spot. The other driver, Hernandez-Mateo sustained major injuries and his five-year-old son suffered minimal injuries. Paramedics airlifted both of them to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Officers believed that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol that caused the fatal crash.
An investigation is underway.
