On Saturday afternoon, three people lost their lives and another sustained major injuries in a DUI crash on Avenue 368 and Road 52.
The CHP actively responded to the scene just after 2:30 p.m. on Avenue 368 and Road 52, east of Highway 99. As per the preliminary investigation, a man was traveling at a high rate of speed on the rural roads of Tulare County when he smashed his Toyota Camry head-on into a minivan. The force of the collision caused a chain reaction, resulting in another crash with an SUV.
“The Camry driver allowed his vehicle to swerve to the eastbound lanes. At the same time , a 2003 Honda Odyssey was heading eastbound approaching the oncoming Camry,” stated CHP Sgt. Ryan Pedersen. “It appears as though the driver of the Honda Odyssey veered to the right in an attempt to avoid being hit by the Camry. However, they collided head-on,”
The authorities found alcohol in the late-model Camry and it smelled of alcohol, Pedersen confirmed. The Camry’s driver died of their injuries in his car. “There are beer cans inside the Camry and it obviously smells horrible,” Pedersen mentioned. “So that’s where we come to that conclusion.”
Reports showed that the passenger side of the minivan with 3 occupants incurred major damages. The men in the minivan also died at the crash scene. A female occupant of the minivan suffered major injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital by first responders. Her current condition remains unknown at this time.
An investigation is continuing.
