On Wednesday, an 89-year-old San Diego man lost his life after suffering an apparent medical emergency while driving and rear-ending an SUV on I-15 in Escondido.
According to reports, the fatal incident took place at around 6:05 p.m. on northbound I-15 south of Valley Parkway. The 89-year-old man was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla when he suffered an apparent medical emergency and crashed into the back of a 2021 Cadillac Escalade SUV.
On arrival, medics found the Toyota driver unresponsive and they rushed him to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he later succumbed to his injuries. As of now, authorities have not confirmed if he died from the medical issue or from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Cadillac, a 58-year-old man from Alamo in Contra Costa County, and his 17-year-old female passenger both sustained injuries as a result of the accident.
An investigation is underway.
