On Wednesday, a suspected DUI crash hospitalized 23-year-old Fernando Arenas Romero of Spanaway, 21-year-old Erlyn A Cumlat of Tacoma and 2 children on state Route 7 in Pierce County.
The incident took place at around 11:30 p.m. involving only one vehicle. Romero was driving a Mazda CX-7 southbound approaching Kjelstad Road East when the vehicle left the roadway to the right and hit a stop sign. The impact caused the car to be rolled and it landed on its roof.
On arrival, medics airlifted two children in the vehicle including a 3-year-old and a 21-month-old to Mary Bridge Hospital. Romero and Erlyn A Cumlat were transported by a private vehicle to Arbor Health, Morton Hospital.
Officials believe that drugs or alcohol may have played a factor in the crash. Romero was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, but it is unknown whether the passengers were wearing seat belts or not. Romero is facing felony DUI, vehicular assault and child endangerment charges. The vehicle was wrecked as a result of the crash.
An investigation is ongoing.
