A bicycle vs. car crash killed 56-year-old John Winston Abbey in midtown (Tucson, AZ)

On Tuesday morning, 56-year-old John Winston Abbey died following a two-vehicle crash in midtown.

As per the initial reports, the incident happened just before 5 a.m. in the 4500 block of E. Grant Rd. Officers and fire personnel immediately responded to the crash scene and, on arrival, found a bicyclist in critical condition. The bicyclist was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The bicyclist was identified as 56-year-old John Winston Abbey by TPD.

The preliminary investigation revealed that driver of the vehicle escaped from the scene after the accident, but the authorities found him in the area of Grant and Columbus. TPD interviewed the driver and identified him as 24-year-old Nicolas Daniel Jesse Tope. Jesse Top collided with the bicyclist in an area where three lanes merge into two on grand Rd.

TPD further said, “An officer from the DUI Unit responded and evaluated the driver of the Kia”. The officer determined that he was impaired at the time of the collision. Tope was booked into Prima County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and for leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

An investigation is continuing.
