On Saturday, a 78-year-old San Diego man lost his life following a two-vehicle collision on SR-905.
The fatal incident took place at around 6:45 a.m. on westbound SR-905, just east of I-5. The preliminary investigation showed that a Chevy truck pulling a small fishing boat had stalled and was partly blocking the slow lane of traffic. A passenger from the Chevy came out of the vehicle and was trying to fix the problem.
Just then, the driver of a Honda CRV approaching the scene failed to see the truck blocking the lane and ended up rear-ending the fishing boat and trailer, which then struck the man. The force of the collision sent the boat/trailer into the passenger. The man suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene by the officials.
A witness in a silver Kia informed the officers that she had a recording of the accident on her dashcam. The driver of the CRV stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. The Honda driver did not seem to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is unknown if fog had reduced visibility on the roadway, and caused the crash.
San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office were requested to the scene at 7:15 a.m. Officers shut down the two right lanes of westbound State Route 905 for four hours as crews worked at the scene. The fast lane was not closed and traffic was not impacted.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
