On Sunday, a 51-year-old driver received moderate injuries and his passenger, a 37-year-old woman, lost her life when their BMW crashed into a disabled vehicle on the 10 Freeway, on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles.
As per the initial information, the fatal accident took place just after 5 a.m. on the eastbound freeway, just west of Santa Fe Avenue. At first, there was a single-vehicle accident, which left a vehicle disabled within the lanes of traffic. The driver inside that vehicle left the scene.
Just a few moments later, a second eastbound vehicle, a 2006 BMW 328i, struck the disabled vehicle. On arrival, first responders rushed the driver of the BMW, a 51-year-old El Monte man to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center with moderate injuries. His passenger, a 37-year-old Baldwin Park woman was also immediately taken to the same hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The preliminary reports showed that additional collisions happened at the same location as a result of the crash. Authorities have not provided a description of the initial, disabled vehicle. A Sig Alert was announced at around 5:20 a.m., blocking the Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 lanes of the eastbound freeway, and was later canceled at 8:49 a.m.
The incident remains under active review.
