A man lost his life following two multi-vehicle accidents early Tuesday that closed down a pair of Highway 101 connector ramps in San Francisco while authorities arrested two drivers, suspected to be driving the influence.
As per the initial information, authorities actively responded to the area on the US-101 southbound to I-80 eastbound elevated connector ramp after getting reports of a crash involving a Nissan sedan. The car was stopped blocking one of the two traffic lanes on the ramp.
Before the responders arrived at the scene, a motorcyclist, only identified as a man in his 30s, approached the disabled Nissan and lost control while attempting to avoid the disabled vehicle. He hit the ramp wall and, due to the impact, was ejected over the wall. The motorcyclist landed on top of a moving Honda sedan that was heading on I-80 westbound to the US-101 southbound connector ramp.
The driver of the Honda stopped while the motorcyclist came to rest on the roadway. While the Honda was stopped blocking traffic, an approaching Subaru Forester failed to safely slow down and ended up hitting the rear of the Honda. The motorcyclist was believed to have been hit by at least one and possibly more vehicles after landing on the roadway surface. He was declared dead at the scene.
The drivers of the Honda and Subaru were both detained and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. The crash forced the shutdown of the connector ramp and led to a Sigalert as investigators worked at the scene. The fatal incident closed down two freeway ramps and stalled traffic in San Francisco for about five hours, causing a massive traffic backup on the Bay Bridge headed into the city. The roadway reopened at around 8:45 a.m. No further details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
