Authorities reported that a fatal crash claimed the life of one person on Wednesday. 93-year-old Eli Johnson lost his life after being struck by a car just off Interstate 17 in north Phoenix in the early hours of the day.
The collision occurred around 5:30 a.m. at 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road. Johnson, walking in a marked crosswalk against a do-not-walk signal, was hit by an eastbound SUV on Thunderbird.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries later. The driver, who showed no signs of impairment, remained at the scene.
The investigation of the events leading up to the pedestrian accident resulted in the closure of both directions of Thunderbird Rd.
