On Tuesday, an 81-year-old woman, from Bellingham, lost her life following a two-vehicle accident in Ferndale.
As per the initial information, the fatal car crash took place at the intersection of Slater Road and Ferndale Road at around 11:30am. The preliminary investigation showed that a red 2005 Chevrolet Aveo southbound on Ferndale Road continued across Slater Road and failed to yield at the stop sign. Just then, an eastbound tanker truck and trailer on Slater Road hit the Sedan on the passenger side.
The incident happened just after a funeral procession had finished passing through the intersection going southbound on Ferndale Road and turning westbound onto Slater Road. The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as an 81-year-old woman, was the sole occupant. She suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the officials.
Officials found out that she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the collision. The truck driver remained unharmed in the accident. It seemed that the victim was not part of the funeral procession. The speed limit on Slater Road at that intersection is 50mph, officials stated. Slater Road was shut down between Imhof Road and LaBounty Drive.
Ferndale Road was also blocked to southbound traffic at Ulrich Road. According to the officials, Slater and Ferndale Roads were both reopened to all traffic at approximately 3pm. No other details are immediately available.
An investigation continues.
