The San Marcos Police Department responded to calls of a major motor vehicle accident involving a White Kia and a silver Toyota Scion at the intersection of McCarty Lane and Hunter Road at approximately 4:45 PM on Thursday.
San Marcos police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the Kia was driving inbound on Hunter Road. The Toyota was traveling outbound when it attempted to turn left onto McCarty Lane when the incident occurred.
Steven Peña, 38, was the driver and only occupant of the Kia as identified by the police. SMPD identified the victim and sole occupant of the Toyota as Barbara Payne, 77, of San Marcos.
Lifesaving efforts by the police were unsuccessful and Payne was pronounced dead. Next of kin has been notified regarding this fatal accident.
